Opera in one act by Enric Palomar based on the play of the same name by Ramón María del Valle-Inclán, adapted by Carlos Wagner
Commissioned by the Fundació del Gran Teatre del Liceu
The opera La cabeza del Bautista (The Head of John the Baptist) is based on the melodrama for puppets by Ramón María del Valle-Inclán, a piece of the “theatre of the grotesque” which is included in his Tableau of Avarice, Lechery and Death (1927).
The work makes an allusion to the myth of Salome, while transposing it to a Spanish village around the end of the 19th Century. It portrays a backward, narrow-minded society, tied to traditional values. Through corrosive humour which disillusions us and reveals the depths of human misery, the work succeeds in shaking our consciences.
World Premiere on 20 April 2009 at Gran Teatre del Liceu de Barcelona.
More than 15.000 spectators in nine performances
